Gunther Steiner recalled that McLaren is taking risks with the invitation of Oscar Piastri.
In 2023, the Australian, who won the titles in Formula 2, Formula 3 and Formula Renault, will replace his compatriot Daniel Ricciardo and will become a team-mate Lando Norris. Haas, on the contrary, relied on the experienced Nico Hulkenberg, and not on the young Mick Schumacher. We are no longer the team we were at the beginning of 2021. We understood that the season would be difficult, so we focused all our resources on preparing the car for 2022. Now we have shown that we are able to stay in the middle group - at least at times. For this we need experience.
Young pilots are always a risk. Today we understand that George Russell, Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris, who came from Formula 2, are outstanding racers, but it is impossible to know in advance. McLaren invited Oscar Piastri. Everyone considers him an amazing talent, but, frankly, even McLaren does not know if the hopes will come true, - said the head of Haas.
